Hey. You can't crop a picture, remove the info about the author and then publish it under a different licence than the original, claiming additionaly that you ae the author. Emptywords (talk) 13:07, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- A year later you are still doing this (eg. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Velma_Middleton_(1955).jpg&oldid=1009920287, which I have now fixed).
- You must credit the original author and retain the original licence. You cannot crop a CC-BY photo and release it as public domain like this. Belbury (talk) 14:17, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Władyslaw Wincze. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). - Jmabel ! talk 04:30, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for information. Please, deleate the page if you can. Regards. Oleo (talk) 05:11, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

File copyright status
[edit] Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their source is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you.
--Belbury (talk) 14:18, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
- That's obvious. Oleo (talk) 06:43, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- What's obvious?
- This is in the context of you having uploaded 79 photos without a clear argument for why they are public domain (Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Oleo), and changing image's credits and licences to "own work by Oleo, public domain" when you crop them. Belbury (talk) 16:14, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- The photographs cropped by me always include the original source. While describing cropped image, I followed patterns found in Commons. Please, inform me what is a proper way of describing a cropped photo. And it's obvious that I do respect copyrights whatsoever. Regards. Oleo (talk) 07:41, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
If you do not wish to have your account blocked, please come to the discussion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#User stripping licences when cropping. You are doing something unacceptable, and it is not clear that you understand and intend to stop. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- I do not intend to do anything unacceptable. If you want to block my account, that's your decision. Oleo (talk) 08:16, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
OK, I'll assume this has been honest error.
There are several issues here. I'll give a example of each that I've noticed; I doubt this is exhaustive
- To claim that a work was published in the U.S. before 1977 without copyright notice, as you did for File:Scott LaFaro.jpg, you actually have to have evidence of that. Either you need an authoritative site (e.g. Library of Congress, New York Public Library) stating that is the case or you need to actually cite the publication that lacked notice. You did neither. You just grabbed it from a site that said "All rights reserved" and asserted with no evidence that it was published in the U.S. before 1977 without copyright notice. File:Don Sebesky.jpg is another example of the same problem.
- For a derivative work, you cannot offer a license that is freer than the source. For example, for File:Concord Jazz record.jpg, the source is File:Concord Jazz vinyl label.jpg. (Slightly weirdly, you link the copy on Wikisource rather than Commons, but that is beside the point.) According to the file page of the latter, that is copyrighted by Samarkandus and is licensed under {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}. That license requires that any derivative works attribute Samarkandus as author (you did not), and offer a {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license (you did not). Instead you offered a {{Cc-zero}} license, which falsely tells people they can use this as if it were public domain (no need to acknowledge Samarkandus as author).
- Also with File:Concord Jazz record.jpg, you give yourself as author. All you did was crop. This means that someone reusing your uploaded version, if they are inclined to credit the image, will probably falsely credit it to you. This is not OK. Usually when Commons users do a crop, they don't even credit themselves as a co-author, but if you wish to do so, the author credit should have read something like "Photo by Samarkandus, cropped by Oleo".
- Also related: unless a work is already CC-zero, like any other license you can only offer a CC-zero license if you own the copyright. You cannot slap a CC-zero on work that contains any copyrighted elements that are either not entirely your own or already under a CC license.
I know that's a lot, but you've been violating a lot of aspects of copyright and licensing. As I say, I suspect what I've noticed isn't exhaustive. It is unlikely that you have done this much wrong and gotten everything else right, but I have only so much time to look through your uploads.
Probably a lot of what you've uploaded will be deleted. In particular, where you've claimed without evidence that work was in the public domain for lack of notice, I'm guessing that you had no evidence rather than that you had it and failed to provide it. Those will have to be deleted unless you have that evidence.
If you want to help undo the mess you've made, you can edit the file pages of the photos you cropped from other free-licensed photos, correct the authorship as described above, and change the license to one compatible with the source. In the future, I strongly recommend Croptool as a means of cropping photos; it does the upload for you, and doesn't mess with the licensing. - Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the explanation that I understand and accept with no doubt. I wasn't aware of some issues mentioned by you. And I've never intended to violate anything. I'd also appreciate, if you could write me what is a correct form of the credits of a Commons photo that I'd like to make cropping and remix at the same time. Oleo (talk) 08:20, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- Credit it exactly as you would otherwise; where you reference the photo as a source, just add "(cropped)" after or, if you want to indicate that you did the crop, "(cropped by Oleo)". - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, I do appreciate your assistance. I've started to clean up the licence mess, I made unwillingly. Oleo (talk) 06:56, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- I've asked some Commons admins to change the name of the photo: File:Włodzimierz Bartoszewicz (1936).jpg. but noone did care. The correct name is: Jan Zamoyski (painter). If you could do this for me, I'd appreciate very much. Oleo (talk) 08:17, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- Sure. In the future, please use internal links when referring to files by name.
- Convenience link for the current file: File:Włodzimierz Bartoszewicz (1936).jpg. Could you please indicate, in similar form, the exact name you want this moved to? (For example, I can't tell from what you wrote whether "1936" should be kept.) By the way, also in the future, you can use {{Rename}} when requesting a file move, and you should be able to fill that out almost automatically by using the "Move" command that is offered on every file page. - Jmabel ! talk 02:17, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. You've helped me a lot. Regards. Oleo (talk) 07:28, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- Credit it exactly as you would otherwise; where you reference the photo as a source, just add "(cropped)" after or, if you want to indicate that you did the crop, "(cropped by Oleo)". - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
